Vintage Gund Monkey Mask plush toy monkey that was made by J Swedlin in the
late 1930s or early 1940s. The distinctive element of this monkey stuffed toy
is that he has a hand painted fabric face that gives him a unique and adorable
look. He is wearing a bright blue felt jacket and his outfit is a fun
multicolored stripe cotton fabric. His clothing is soft and durable and has
stood the test of time well with only some light wear from all those hugs he's
received over the years. He still has the original tag sewn on.
Measures approximately 11 inches long x 8 1/2 inches wide. His legs bend
easily allowing him to sit in a natural position.
Condition: In very good condition with no stains, rips, or missing fur. The
paint on the monkey's face is still intact and is bold and bright. His face is
clean and both felt ears are still attached and in perfect condition. His fur
is very slightly matted, but just from being loved so much!
'Monkey Mask' animals are currently quite hard to find, especially ones in
such nice condition.
HISTORY: We know that this Monkey Mask toy is pre-1943 because the attached
label says "J Swedlin" and not "Gund." Swedlin became Gund's apprentice in 1909
at the age of 14. The success of Gund has been attributed to Swedlin's skill at
design. When Gund retired in 1925, he sold the company to Swedlin who brought
in his brothers to help run the company. They changed the name of the company
to J. Swedlin, Inc., but kept Gund as their trade name. Between 1925 and 1943
the name Gund was not found on their labels or tags.
Everyone will want to hug this adorable colorful and oh so friendly little
monkey. She / He is a perfect home accent for animal lovers and charming
addition to a nursery or child's room! He's not scary for little tots at all.
