Carl Walter Walinski a.k.a. Bucky began his career as the spokesman for
Toledo’s
Buckeye Brewery in 1936. Shortly after Prohibition, the brewery adopted a
Dwarf cartoon character named Bucky to promote their beer. A salesman for the
brewery called on the Green Lite Tavern on Toledo’s west side and meet the 4’
5” Walinski tending bar.
He convinced the brewery executives to make Carl their real life Bucky.
Dressed as the Buckeye waiter, Carl would roller skate into bars thought the
city with a bottle of Buckeye and a glass on a tray. To promote their Bock
Beer, the Brewery gave Bucky a mini-chariot pulled by a goat named Billy. Carl
left the Brewery in 1942. He went on to be the Mascot and Bat-Boy for the
Toledo Mud Hens. Carl Walinski died in 2002 at 92 years old.
